At dusk today the island was in good shape. The ocean was rough and rain bands were active. No ocean wash overs were found.
The wind direction change late this afternoon indicated Dorian was on the move as validated by the Weather Channel. The next few hours hopefully will not bring any surprises.
I don’t expect to find major damage when the island is checked first thing in the morning. The Holden Beach Water and Sewer Department will be checking the systems first thing in hopes of returning to normal operations.
Brunswick County announced earlier today that they had turned off the water to the Brunswick County islands. Later in the day they corrected their announcement. The towns were/are using water stored in the town water tanks to service the towns during the storm.
The intent is to check the island early in the morning and to hopefully have services ready so that the bridge can be opened. If there are no major issues the island will reopen to everyone. If there are complications, only limited access will be allowed. As of now, no complications are known.
Don’t forget your decals/ stickers!
An email update will follow the damage assessment tomorrow.
